We Heard the Bells, narrated by award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson (Law & Order), explores the personal and family experiences of a diverse group of Americans during the influenza pandemic of 1918. History unfolds as survivors of the pandemic tell their stories. Their memories frame the key questions that still drive the search for answers to help us weather the current H1N1 pandemic and future flu pandemics.

Pandemic How to Prevent an Outbreak
With coronavirus dominating headlines, Netflix‘s new documentary Pandemic is eerily timed.
The six-part docuseries, which dropped on 22nd January, looks at how prepared (or not) the world is to deal with a deadly virus.
Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak starts with a theory that we’re due for a new, fast-moving deadly virus.
The documentary looks back at a deadly influenza virus – which killed 50 to 100 million people at a time when the global population was just two billion in 1918 – showing black and white footage of people in tiny face masks, and lots of mass graves being dug. It moves onto the current battle to contain Ebola virus in Congo to anti-vaxxer parents.
Not for the faint-hearted, the scenes will have you asking questions about our current times.
Here’s what we learnt from Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak.

Killer in Our Classroom Never Again
In February 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, carrying a semi-automatic rifle. He killed fourteen pupils and three members of staff.
In the aftermath of one of the worst mass school shootings in recent history, students from the school organised what became a global, youth-led movement, campaigning for stricter gun laws in America.
With filming beginning shortly after the shooting, this documentary follows pupils from the school, including Lewis Mizen, a 17-year-old British senior, as they take on the establishment to demand change. The film also tells the stories of some of the other students affected by the shooting

Hillsborough
Hillsborough is an in-depth, moving account of Britain's worst sporting disaster, in which 96 men, women and children were killed, hundreds injured and thousands traumatised.
Beginning with that fateful day, 15 April 1989, the film details the horror of the tragedy, told through the experiences of those directly involved: fans, survivors, family members and police officers. Many speak publicly for the first time.
It captures the horror of the crush on the terraces, revealing the prejudices held by the police towards football fans. It exposes the police commanders' abject failure in leadership as the tragedy unfolded, and their deceit and determination to deflect responsibility for their failures in crowd management onto those who survived.
The documentary exposes the lack of dignity shown to bereaved families as they arrived in Sheffield to identify their loved ones laid out in body bags on a gymnasium floor. It considers the impact of the orchestrated vilification of fans in the media and, as a consequence, their public condemnation. By interviewing those involved, it recounts the 27-year campaign for justice fought on behalf of the 96 who died.

Drain The Titanic
The most famous shipwreck in the world, RMS Titanic, lies nearly 2 half miles (4 kilometres) down in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 400 miles (650kms) from the nearest land. Since the discovery of the wreck in 1985, there have been numerous expeditions to the site, but until now, no one has ever recorded the full extent of what really remains on this remote area of seabed. Now, over a century on from her tragic loss we are able to reveal the overall wreck site: we will virtually drain the Titanic. Spectacular new visualisation techniques will depict this ‘draining’ process – and offer viewers a ringside view for the emergence of the wreck from the waves – the first time since April 15th 1912.
